DEFINITION:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Housing and Residential Life (Director), the Assistant Director of Student Housing & Residential Life is responsible for overseeing the daily leadership and implementation of the educational and operational facets of the Residential Life program, within nine traditional residence halls, two suite style halls, and two apartment complexes housing over 2,500 students.  Responsible for providing administrative and management support to the Director in support of the mission of the Office of Student Housing and Residential Life, and serves as a member of the departmental senior management team.  The primary areas of responsibility are staff supervision, programs and events, conduct, staff training, leadership development, and theme housing, with secondary responsibility in operations, administration, billing, assignments, facility management, and customer service.  In the absence of the Director and the Associate Director, the Assistant Director position assumes responsibility for oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Student Housing & Residential Life.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

 1.  Assists in the overall administration of Student Housing & Residential Life programs and services.  Independently supervises, trains, develops and evaluates four Community Directors who supervise our RA?s, residence halls, and apartments.  This position also supervises, trains, develops, and evaluates the Community Director for Conduct and Summer Conferences, and the Community Director for Residential Education.  Responsible for the recruitment and retention of students and professional staff reflective of the diversity of the student body.  Develops agendas and regularly conducts meetings with department personnel.  Facilitates the effective development of a cooperative and collaborative working relationship among professional and student staff members.
 2.  Responds to the needs and problems of residents in a conscientious, appropriate, and timely manner.  Meets with students, investigates issues, provides written follow-up to student concerns/complaints.  Resolves severe or sensitive student or parental concerns and makes report of resolution to the Director of Student Housing & Residential Life, Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Affairs and/or President.
 3.  Prepares and allocates a significant portion of the departmental budget and directs spending within assigned areas.  Assists in the development of Student Housing & Residential Life goals and objectives.
 4.  Responsible for collaborating with Student Affairs staff in regards to planning, publicizing, and implementing campus recruitment programs and other special university-wide events for Student Housing & Residential Life.
 5.  Communicates and clarifies departmental expectations with reference to resolution of student conduct and employment difficulties.  Serves as a resource and a referral for Student Housing & Residential Life staff in advanced conduct issues.  Serves as department liaison to Foundation Human Resources.
 6.  Functions as departmental liaison to Judicial Affairs, Student Activities, Career Development, Personal Growth and Counseling Center, C.A.R.E. Team, University Police Department, Human Resources, Academic Departments, ASAP, Academic Advising, First Year Experience, Service Learning, Faculty Mentor Program, IT, Facility Services, Extended Education, Conference and Events, Telecommunications, and Vending Services.
 7.  Intervenes and assists in the resolution of staff and student concerns and emergencies, which may disrupt the normal routine of the residential community.
 8.  Coordinates the annual Quality of Student Life survey campus housing.  Facilitates effective ongoing formal evaluation of programmatic efforts to insure that they are meeting the goals of Student Housing &Residential Life and Student Affairs.
 9.  Responsible for the overall development and collaborative implementation of student success, academic success and support programs within the campus residential community for our students.  Implements programs that are consistent with the University Vision Statement, and the Division of Student Affairs and the Department of Student Housing & Residential Life missions.  Collaboratively designs and implements a strategic residential learning plan that includes faculty, staff, and student involvement.
 10. Responsible for the integration of university academic support efforts, student success initiatives, student retention efforts, and cultural diversity within the residential environment.
 11. Coordinates processes and strategies for professional and para-professional staff selection.  Designs and implements an intentional and comprehensive training program for professional and para-professional staff.  Provides administrative support for the evaluation of all professional and para-professional staff members.
 12. Intervenes and assists in the resolution of interpersonal and inter group conflicts, which may disrupt the normal routine of the residential community.
 13. Provides Director with timely and appropriate information as it relates to students experiencing problems and/or incidents in the residential community.
 14. Responsible for the oversight of the Student Housing & Residential Life disciplinary process for main campus housing.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
*  Assists the Director and the Associate Director of Student Housing & Residential Life in the overall administration of Student Housing & Residential Life programs and services.
*  Prepares reports as necessary for Director regarding department activity.
*  Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the Student Housing and Residential Life program.
*  Serves actively on departmental and other University committees/task forces, as assigned.
*  Identifies issues of area or departmental concern and takes initiative to resolve or report them and assist in the identification of potential solutions. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, management and activities of a Student Housing and Residential Life program; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management; general knowledge of research/interview techniques and principles of individual and group behavior.  Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to initiate and use resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate date and make written or verbal presentations; ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters and complex matters; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty CSU administrators, student organizations, and others in committee work.  Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.  Must have the ability to sensibly manage emergencies and respond diplomatically and effectively to complaints.  Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or students organizations; analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.  Ability and skill to supervise the work of multiple direct reports and effectively recommend personnel actions; strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills; train and evaluate the productivity and performance of employees; and analyze situations and take corrective action. Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Master?s Degree in Student Personnel, Student Affairs, or a related field including experience with counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution AND three to four years of progressively responsible post-graduate professional student services work experience managing and coordinating a Student Housing and Residential Life program experience.
Special Condition (s) of Employment:
Must be available to work evening and weekends when necessary. Advanced fluency in using various standard office software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Demonstrated technical literacy with electronic mail, mail merges, data entry, electronic scheduling, and internet communication software. Ability to work in an occasional high-pressured environment. Ability to operate a wide variety of office equipment and independently troubleshoot problems. Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above.  Ability to complete and pass web-based training in Defensive Driving. Must continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment.
NOTE: Candidates identified for hire with the University Corporation at Monterey Bay must successfully complete a criminal background check.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience supervising live-in professionals and will have contributed substantially to the development and management of a residential life program. Highly desirable:  Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.  Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population and performing community services; demonstrated technical literacy.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The hiring salary for this position is commensurate with education and experience, in the $50,000 range annually.  This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. Corporation of CSUMB positions are at-will employment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Typical office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position is required to work at a computer/video display terminal and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.  Must have own transportation, valid driver?s license, and auto insurance.  This position also requires sitting, standing, bending, pushing, pulling, talking and using manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination. Ability to lift 20-30lbs.
