Subject: FEDERAL BUDGET BATTLING -- INSIDE HIGHER ED Weekly Update --
February 18, 2011
To: Vincent <vtharris at gmail.com>

Hello. Washington began to get serious this week about funding the federal
government going forward, and higher education was in the thick of the
debate. President Obama and House Republicans put forward very different
approaches to many key programs for colleges and students, setting up a
potential showdown in the coming weeks over that and other priorities.
Several articles below explore that dynamic. Plus Texas' governor proposes a
$10,000 bachelor's degree, and one leading liberal arts college tries to
cuts its tuition price and tries reframe the national discussion about
college prices. That and more below. Enjoy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPENDING SHOWDOWN: House Republicans would slash deeply into programs for
colleges and students, while President Obama would cut surgically from
higher ed:

HOUSE POISED TO BLOCK 'GAINFUL': With strong GOP support and some Democratic
backing, lawmakers seem on track to pass amendment to stop Education
Department from enforcing restrictions on for-profit colleges:

MAXIMUM PELL, AT ALL COSTS: Obama administration's 2012 budget plan would
keep the top grant at $5,550 -- but would pay for it by ending year-round
Pell Grant and a loan subsidy for graduate students:

'TOUGH LOVE' BUDGET FOR SCIENCE: Despite cuts elsewhere, academic research
would see healthy increases in President Obama's 2012 budget:
