Subject: First Year Adviser Position at Miami University (OH)
Miami University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of First
Year Adviser.
Overview of the Position
The First Year Adviser is a live-in master's-level professional who is
responsible for the operation of one residence hall, housing between 140
and 350 first-year students. This full-time professional serves as both the
hall director and the academic adviser to first year students living in the
residence hall. The First Year Adviser is charged with shaping the
environment and experiences of first year students by providing services
and programs focusing on the Office of Residence Life's Residential
Curriculum. This encompasses learning outcomes of academic success,
effective community engagement, intrapersonal development and cultural
proficiency. The position First-Year Adviser reports to a Coordinator of
Residence Life. Depending on the size of the residence hall, some First
Year Advisers supervise a graduate student; called the Assistant First Year
Adviser.
Basic Qualifications
A master's degree conferred by July 15, 2010, the proven ability to
relate to diverse populations, and experience in supervision required. The
First Year Adviser must be able to work autonomously, demonstrate
initiative, display strong commitment to student learning, communicate
effectively, and work collaboratively with colleagues at the University.
Individuals in this position must have the ability and willingness to
assume shared responsibility for campus-wide on-call duty.
Preferred Qualifications
Post-baccalaureate experience in residence life, counseling, academic
advising, and living/learning environments is desired. Strong supervisory,
administrative, and counseling skills are utilized in this position.
