Subject: Service Opportunity - Ohio University Habitat for Humanity's
 Cardboard City

Dear Student Organization Leader,

We are writing to offer your organization the opportunity to participate in a service opportunity offered at our Cardboard City event this month.

Cardboard City is an event that serves several purposes for Habitat for Humanity. It is an advocacy event where we can spread the message of Habitat for Humanity to a large audience, it is a fundraiser, and it is a way of drumming up local support for Habitat in Athens County.

This year the event will be held in the Morton Hall parking lot Saturday the 24th of September, with registration starting around 6pm. Individuals and teams participating dig into our supply of cardboard and along with duct tape, use it to build a makeshift shelter. These shelters combine into a makeshift village, namely the "Cardboard City". Individuals and teams then spend the night in their shelter (barring horrendous weather of course).

As an advocacy event, the simulation of extreme poverty housing has an effect on both participants and any passer-by.

As far as student organizations, our main focus is offering groups the opportunity to participate in the event.  We tend to center in on service groups, or other student groups interested in service opportunities.  Teams participating in the event are encouraged to donate $15 per participant, but any donation level from a student group is appreciated.  In the event that a group’s donation does not average to $15 per member that group brings to the event, the group will only be given the amount of event T-shirts that their donation divisible by $15 is equivalent to.
