Southern Students, I am forwarding an E-mail that I receive from Veterans Support Services in Athens.  It has upcoming events and information that might be interesting and/or helpful for our veteran students and really everyone.  At the bottom of the page there are two scholarship opportunities that you might want to take a look at.  The deadlines are coming up soon so take a look!
Once again, I am extending the offer to assist you in getting activities and organizations for veterans going on Southern Campus.  I would love for us to do this but I really haven’t had interest expressed.

Modern Warfare, Returning Home, Post Traumatic Stress and Its Treatment

Eric Burke, an OU undergraduate in history, served for a total of 30 months as a combat infantryman in Iraq and Afghanistan. Until recently, he was one of an estimated 270,000 PTSD-wounded Post 911 War veterans who - because of stigma-enforced silence and bureaucratic roadblocks - had not received adequate treatment. However, beginning in 2012, not only did he seek and begin treatment, but he also helped to combat the stigma surrounding PTSD with a Soul Of Athens video titled The War Within<http://ohio.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c9d3bebcccac083cbd111daee&id=12717068fe&e=475ffe5922> and by speaking at the Athens area’s annual Crisis Intervention Training for police.

Research Participants Needed
My name is Helen Ellsworth -- I am a researcher at the University of Chicago seeking student veterans to participate in a research project on collegiate success. This research aims to provide a holistic view of factors that influence academic achievement, my concentration being veteran experience. Participants are asked to complete an anonymous, 15-minute, one-time survey. This exact survey has been completed by hundreds of students on the University of Chicago campus and beyond.

OU Female Student Veterans
Support, Discussion, Connection, and more…
Staff from the Women’s Center in collaboration with Counseling and Psychological Services and Military and Veterans Resources is starting a support group for female veterans. We realize the toll that military service, possible combat, and then re-entering a world that may never look the same to you can take on a person. This adjustment may be unique for women given the many layers of your experience. If you are interested in speaking with and finding support from other female veterans at Ohio University this group is for you!

This group will meet on Tuesdays at 8:00pm at the Women’s Center, 403 Baker Center.  The focus of the group is on connecting those present to each other, to support, and to appropriate resources. 2013 Google SVA Scholarship

Student Veterans of America & Google have partnered to provide eight (8) $10,000 scholarships to student veterans via SVA's network! Eligible students must be pursuing a bachelor's or graduate degree in Computer Science, or a closely related field. These student veterans have the potential to usher in a new generation of American progress and to address some of our nation's most pressing needs. This partnership will support the tech-savvy professionals that are well equipped to answer the challenges of tomorrow. The 2013 Google-SVA Scholarship application will close March 31, 2013 at 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time. Student veterans must complete an online application, attach the required documents, and arrange their letters of reference be provided by the deadline to be considered.
