Hi Dr. Paulins!

My name is Jillian Schmidt, and I graduated in the class of 2010 with my degree in Retail Merchandising.  I was writing to you because I still receive e-mails and updates from you regarding internship and job possibilities for Retail majors.  I wanted to share with you what I have done in the past year so you could pass this information on to others.  Upon graduation last June, I spent about a month at home searching for the "perfect job" with great benefits, pay, etc.  I quickly realized it was nearly impossible for a recent grad to have all of those things!! I expanded my comfort zone and searched for jobs in Dallas, TX.  I interviewed with a company who had an ad up for an Entry-Level Marketing Campaign Manager. The company had a structure that I'd never seen before... they were taking 5 or 6 years of corporate training, and shoving it into 6-8 months, where I would then be taken out of entry level and into a management role (given that I provide all the hard work, time and effort needed) I knew I was a hard worker so I went for it! What we did was take high end, luxury items (Example: Amika Hair styling tools) and bringing them into a high-volume retail store at a discounted rate.  We used direct marketing and were able to turn a 30 day result for our clients in 11 days!! It was an interesting approach, and I learned A LOT about myself.  About 5 months into it, after a lot of grunt work, I qualified to open my own office! A few months ago I moved to Jacksonville, Florida where I am now running my own company! I cannot believe that one year after graduation I am now a business owner in the state of Florida! The point of my e-mail is, if you choose, to pass this on to show students the importance of looking for GROWTH in a company when applying!  Words such as salary and benefits seem attractive right away, but having the ability to write your own paycheck and see direct results from your hard-work was definitely the route to go for me :) We have offices ALL across the nation, and I believe there are 2-3 currently in Ohio.  If any of the students are interested in following my footsteps please have them contact me.  I can direct them to the office that is closest to them, or in any state they want to live!!
