Greetings:

It might feel that summer just started, but with the fall semester quickly approaching, it’s time to organize EcoLunch. We ask faculty, staff, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers to consider sharing your research with our community this semester. EcoLunch has had a long history of holding our intellectual community together and we ask that you consider participating in our shared endeavor. We especially seek talks from Biology, Plant Biology, Geology, Biomedical, Anthropology, Philosophy, History, Mathematics, and any other department with ties to OCEES.

As a special note: we encourage talks on works in progress. I understand the temptation to focus on completed projects, but that is what a thesis/dissertation defense is for. Talks on ideas or new research are useful because they provide an opportunity for early feedback while there is still time for feedback to be helpful. It also is useful for developing and clarifying ideas, and figures can be recycled for theses, papers, and grant proposals. We’re all friends, we’re here to help, and it’s a small group, so don’t be shy to talk about upcoming or ongoing work.

EcoLunch will continue to be in person. To be inclusive, we may have an online component, but the expectation is that graduate students will attend in person. In BIOS, every MS student has to give at least one EcoLunch, and every PhD student has to deliver three. The fall semester is typically far less full than the spring semester, so giving your seminar in the fall is a good strategy.

For new members of our community, welcome! EcoLunch will be held every Wednesday from 11:50–12:40 in 159 Irvine Hall. You are welcome to bring your lunch! To sign up for the OCEES listserv, please follow this link: https://listserv.ohio.edu/mailman/listinfo/ocees.

The first week will be the OCEES organizational meeting. All OCEES faculty are asked to attend. This is an important meeting as we decide the direction of our organization and your input is important. Other OCEES members can skip this meeting.
