  2. It doesn’t appear that there is a seminar in PBIO this week, the the BIOS/BMS joint seminar is not yet advertised. I’ll send an update when I learn more. If you’d like anything else advertised, please let me know (kuchta at ohio.edu<mailto:kuchta at ohio.edu>) and I’ll send it out. Please do not email Dr. Roosenburg.

Finally, as many of you know, Willem and Kate Roosenburg’s daughter, Selinde, passed away last week. The Roosenburgs are extremely grateful for the outpouring of sympathy and support. Many have inquired about the circumstances, and Willem gave us this message to pass on. It is a sad and difficult read:

Lindy was working on a prescribed fire at the Richland Furnace State Forest in Jackson County. She was a member of the Ohio Wildland Fire Crew. We do not know the precise details of exactly what happened, but I do know that she was returning to base and the UTV she was riding in made an abrupt turn that threw her from the vehicle and then rolled on top of her pinning her head under the vehicle. She received a “devastating” brain injury and slowly slipped into brain death as her brain swelled and herniated onto the brain stem. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. The accident happened around 17:00 Tuesday and she was declared brain dead Thursday afternoon. Kate, Dirk, Kees (her partner) and I were all with her during the last 48 hours and we feel confident that despite being in a coma, she was aware of our presence. Her body was given for organ donation and know that almost all of her vital organs were recovered and have given life to numerous other people. We are learning more about this as time progresses. This is everything that we know as we await the outcome of the investigation.

If you’d like to help, please send donations in her name to Athens Conservancy or other conservation orgs.

Sincerely,
Shawn Kuchta
