AND ENVIRONMENT LUNCH AND LEARN
Injection Well Research and Community Engagement
Jen Bowman and Natalie Kruse will present on the Sugar Bush Foundation funded project titled, "Bringing transparency to environmental issues surrounding Class II injection wells through community engagement in eastern Athens County." Athens County received the greatest input of hydraulic fracturing waste in Ohio in 2016. The presentation will discuss the research, characterize the groundwater quality near injection wells, build a foundation of knowledge and understanding about science, data, and communication strategies related to injection wells. Additionally, speakers will talk about providing community trainings and roundtable discussions to residents to build understanding and capacity within the community to empower effective community participation with environmental decision makers.
In 2016, Ohio's injection wells accepted 27,528,860 barrels or 1,156,212,120 gallons of liquid waste, almost twice as much as three years earlier. 12,007,300 barrels or 504,306,600 gallons came from out of state in 2016.
JEN BOWMAN is the acting director of environmental programs at Ohio University's Voinovich School. She works with stakeholders to shape and implement programs that elevate and enhance Ohio University's environmental research. Jen coordinates the watershed research efforts of the Appalachian Watershed Research Group across campus involving staff, faculty, and students.
DR. NATALIE KRUSE is an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies in the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs. Alongside her collaborators, Kruse has completed research funded by the American Electric Power Foundation, the US Department of Energy,
the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America, the UK Coal Authority, the European Union and Coal India with a focus on mining, oil and gas and industrial water pollution.
