Ohio FCS' Relationship with IFHE and AAFCS
Ohio AFCS is an affiliate to the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). AAFCS holds membership in the International Federation of Home Economics (IFHE), with status as a Non-Governmental Organization with the United Nations.

Family & Consumer Sciences Discipline:
The primary goal of FCS is the improvement of the quality of life for individuals, families, and community. The quality of the environment has a direct impact on the quality of life for all.

Ellen Swallow Richards - Family & Consumer Sciences Connection with Ecology and Consumer Sustainability:

  * On March 3, 2009 during Women's History Month, Ellen Swallow Richards (1842-1911), founder of Home Economics, was one of the five women recognized by President Obama in "taking the lead to save the planet".
  * Ellen Swallow Richards was elected the first AHEA president from 1909-1910. The American Home Economics Association was founded in 1909, and had a name change in 1993 to American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences.
  * Her early work involved testing water quality. She is recognized for beginning the ecology movement.
  * Ellen Swallow Richards was known for communicating clear and meaningful messages. It is documented that she would conclude her letters by writing "Keep Thinking".
I wanted to share my thoughts of why this year's conference is relevant for each of us, as we all have an important role in encouraging consumer sustainability.

Look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely,
Susan Shockey, PhD, CFCS, CPFFE
2020 OAFCS Conference Chair
