Hi Todd,

As I believe OU is also doing, beginning Monday, due to concerns relating to the Coronavirus, Marietta College will proceed with offering all classes in an online-only format. As a result, we have been forced to cancel Francis Su’s visit and public lecture. I wanted to pass this along to everyone that I had contacted previously so we don’t have people showing up for a lecture that is no longer occurring. We hope to reschedule the visit for next year, but that may or may not be possible.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi!

My name is Matt Menzel, and I am a math professor and Phi Beta Kappa chapter Vice President at Marietta College. On Monday, March 16 – Tuesday, March 17 our Phi Beta Kappa chapter will be hosting Francis Su, who is a renowned teacher, mathematician, and recent President of the Mathematical Association of America, as a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar. The main event for his visit will be a public lecture, entitled Mathematics for Human Flourishing, that he will give at 7pm on March 16 (Monday) in the McDonough Auditorium at Marietta College. I’ve attached Dr. Su’s bio and talk abstract to this e-mail, and his lecture definitely will have a liberal arts flair. His Flourishing talk also corresponds to his recently released book (January 2020) with the same title, and Prof. Su will be doing a book signing immediately after his lecture on the 16th. On Tuesday, March 17 from 5-6pm, Prof. Su will be presenting a talk entitled, “Voting in Agreeable Societies” that will be more geared toward undergraduate mathematics students. The abstract for this talk is also in the attached file. Both talks are free and open to the public, and due to your close proximity, I wanted to contact you in case any of your math faculty or students might be interested in attending. I would greatly appreciate it if you could pass the word along to the rest of your department, and please let me know if you have any questions for me or any suggestions for whom to further publicize this to at OU.

Thanks,
Matt Menzel

Professor of Mathematics, Marietta College
