Dear Graduates,

If you plan to defend a thesis or dissertation to graduate in May (May 3rd to be exact!) then you need to memorize this schedule or put it somewhere that you can easily find the deadlines.

Remember it is not the responsibility of your advisor, thesis chair or dissertation chair to meet the deadlines --- these are YOUR deadlines. Follow them carefully and make sure you allow for enough time for your committee and chair to review/edit your materials before they go to TAD!

To all College-office contacts, Graduate Directors, Chairpersons and Advisors,

First, I would like to thank you for your continuing assistance with students as they proceed toward graduation with a thesis or dissertation. The first semester for TAD Services has ended and we are happy to announce that with everyone's help and cooperation, 61 students completed the TAD Process under the new deadlines. Unfortunately, several students who could have been Fall graduates had to complete the process early for Spring due to deadline confusion and I hope you will take a few moments to review the deadlines as we go into Spring semester which will definitely be more busy and will offer more chances for deadline confusion among students.

I am attaching the AY 2012-13 deadline sheet to this email to clarify all deadlines. I request that you print a copy for your references and encourage you to share it with students.

All deadlines listed are firm and interdependent. Missing any of the deadlines will result in a failure to graduate without exception. As the only full time staff member handling TAD Services any question of missing deadlines will be referred to the Associate Dean as I will not be in a position to discuss deadlines and attend to graduating students at the same time. All deadline information is available on the TAD Services website and has been available for a year. Students who miss the Spring semester deadline can always attempt the “Early for Summer” deadline to avoid tuition and fees in the Summer, but their graduation date will NOT be for May.

Please note the different deadlines for Doctoral and Masters candidates. Masters candidate deadlines are approximately one month after doctoral deadlines.

A doctoral candidate who misses the doctoral deadline will not be permitted participate in commencement. Exceptions to this rule will be approved in limited cases when students fail to meet the requisite deadlines for spring graduation due to extenuating circumstances.

As a reminder, the Graduate College requires students at a minimum to:

Follow discipline-specific style guidelines (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.). The Patton College has an additional handbook for their students to follow.

Format the front of the document and other general formats to meet TAD guidelines. (Sample front matter is available here: http://www.ohio.edu/graduate/upload/FOD_Sample.pdf)

Student, advisor, and committee are responsible for the academic integrity, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and scholarly format of the document.

If a non-traditional, free-form layout is selected for illustration purposes, the body of the document must be created using a style guide and the established formatting guidelines and then the presentation of the non-traditional, free-form layout should be placed in the appendix.

If a non-traditional, free-form layout is selected for illustration purposes, the student may consider presenting this information as a multimedia piece that links from the required “front” of document text (i.e. abstract, introduction). First, according to a style guide, the student would create the standard front matter and reference list and then, provide a link to a multimedia slide presentation that displays each page of the dissertation one page at a time.
Templates are available and have been updated since last summer. Please direct students to www.ohio.edu/tad to find all required forms and optional templates.

Dr. Angela McCutcheon has accepted a new position outside of the university and will no longer be a contact for TAD Services. Her last day with OU will be January 16. Any questions about the TAD process should be directed to armstros@ohio.edu or 740-597-2770.
