<p>The launch of Lady Gaga’s youth empowerment initiative,

<a href="http://e2ma.net/go/11014018560/208877516/232796317/1407683/goto:http://thebullyproject.com/" title="Bully" target="_blank">Bully</a>,” which chronicles the 2009-10 school year in the lives of three harassed youth, have sparked a number of conversations about the very definition of bullying and what schools, families and society can do to help ensure all students feel safe and welcomed for who they are. </p>
<p>New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof joins the effort with an
<a href="http://e2ma.net/go/11014018560/208877516/232796318/1407683/goto:http://kristof.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/07/teen-essay-contest-on-bullying/" title="essay contest" target="_blank">essay contest</a>. Open to teens age 14 to 19, Kristof is seeking submissions of up to 500 words about bullying or how to address it. The contest’s partners include
<a href="http://e2ma.net/go/11014018560/208877516/232796319/1407683/goto:http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/" title="The New York Times Learning Network" target="_blank">The New York Times Learning Network</a> and
<a href="http://e2ma.net/go/11014018560/208877516/232796320/1407683/goto:https://www.teenink.com/KristofContest/" title="Teen Ink magazine" target="_blank">Teen Ink magazine</a>, which will select the finalists. Kristof will choose the winners. The deadline is April 30. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, danah boyd, a research fellow at the Born This Way Foundation, wrote an important
<a href="http://e2ma.net/go/11014018560/208877516/232796321/1407683/goto:http://blogs.wsj.com/ideas-market/2012/04/10/five-misunderstandings-about-bullying/" title="column for the Wall Street Journal" target="_blank">column for the Wall Street Journal</a> identifying “five aspects of bullying that must be broadly understood in order to move from awareness to action.” She notes, for example, that cyberbullying has become “an unnecessary distraction,” and she explains why anti-bullying assemblies and the messages of advocates are often ignored. </p>
<p>“Teens don’t recognize most of the meanness and cruelty they witness or experience as bullying; they see it as drama, teasing or pranking. Students do recognize certain serious encounters as bullying, but they often lack the social, structural and educational infrastructure to make a difference,” writes boyd, adding that the most effective programs require long-term commitments and community involvement. </p>
<p>“If we want to create a kinder, braver world, we must collectively work to develop compassion, empathy and respect.”
