Overview:<br>
<br>
Fellowships at the Newberry Library provide assistance to researchers who wish to use our collections, but who cannot finance a visit on their own. Fellowships at the Newberry Library are of two types: short-term fellowships with terms of one to two months and long-term fellowships of six to eleven months. Short-term fellowships are generally restricted to individuals from outside the metropolitan Chicago area and are primarily intended to assist researchers with a need to examine specific items in the Library's collection. Long-term fellowships are generally available without regard to an applicant's place of residence and are intended to support significant works of scholarship that draw on the Library's strengths.<br>

Eligibility/Benefits:<br>

Short-term fellowships: The grants are generally restricted to post-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates, or holders of other terminal degrees from outside of the <<a href="http://www.newberry.org/research/felshp/faq.html#%23What" target="_blank">http://www.newberry.org/research/felshp/faq.html##What</a> constitutes the>Chicago area who have a specific need for Newberry collections. Some fellowships, however, are open to other categories of applicants and Chicago residents.<br>
<br>
· Generally restricted to post-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates, or holders of other terminal degrees<br>
<br>
· Short-term fellowships typically vary from 1-2 months, unless otherwise noted under the award description.<br>
<br>
· The amount of the award is typically $1600 per month, unless otherwise noted under the award description.<br>
<br>
Long-term fellowships: These grants support individual research and promote serious intellectual exchange through active participation in the Library's scholarly activities, including a biweekly fellows' seminar. Available to post-doctoral scholars for periods of 6 -11 months.<br>
· Applicants must hold the Ph.D. at the time of application.<br>
<br>
· The stipends range from $25,200 to $50,400.<br>
<br>
Special Awards and Fellowships: Newberry Library also offers exchange fellowships with British, French, and German institutions, a fellowship for American Indian women pursuing postgraduate education and a fellowship for published independent scholars.<br>
