Research Compliance hosts winter workshops

The Office of Research Compliance will host a series of workshops Winter
Quarter on the topics of responsible conduct of research, conflict of
interest and the use of human and animal subjects in research. Faculty
members, graduate students and research staff are invited to attend.

"Conflict of Interest" will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday,
Jan. 15, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11. All Ohio University
faculty and employees must complete a conflict of interest form before
receiving grants from an external funding source. The form, which must be
completed annually, helps the university ensure that all research
activities are in compliance with federal, state and university policies.
Compliance staff will offer guidance on policies, regulations and forms
required.

"Responsible Conduct of Research" will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
on Wednesday, Jan. 28, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17. This
workshop will provide an introduction to conducting research responsibly.
The session will outline the nine areas that make up RCR education and will
provide a synopsis and brief case study for each. It also will focus on how
to avoid common pitfalls in responsible conduct of research.

"Navigating the IRB" will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday,
Jan. 22, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24. This workshop will
provide an overview of the Institutional Review Board, which reviews all
uses of human subjects in research. This includes clinical trials, surveys,
interviews and observation. Compliance staff will offer guidance on what
types of activities require IRB review, will explain review levels and
review criteria and will offer tips for completing the project outline form
for submission.

"Navigating the IACUC" will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday,
Jan. 20, and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4. This workshop will
provide an overview of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee,
which reviews and approves all uses of vertebrate animal subjects in
research. Compliance staff will offer guidance on policies, regulations and
forms required.

All workshops will be held in 102 Research and Technology Center (RTEC).
The sessions are open to the university community; no pre-registration is
required.
