Hello Graduates:

A great dissertation or publishing idea from Laura Hibbard. I am very
interested in this topic as well and have written in a book chapter about
digital citizenship so maybe if you are interested, this would be a good
topic for a dissertation. See her note below.

Thanks Laura for the idea!

Dr. Franklin,

Being the parent of two pre-teens (yikes!) and a teacher as well, I
think a nice dissertation/thesis topic would be internet safety and if
children are being taught about the dangers of sharing personal information
over the internet. Kids are so trustworthy and this makes a scary scenario
online. This topic is pretty prevalent in our household and pretty much
ignored in the official school curriculum. Schools and parents hammer in
"stranger danger," but are internet friends strangers? Kids seem not to
think so. The concept of teaching credible sources is covered in the
schools (at least in 5th grade) but teaching children internet safety is
typically left to parents. There are many social-networking types of sites
for children and kids are drawn to these. My own daughters SWEAR they're
conversing with kids and we try endlessly to teach them that they simply do
not know who they are talking/typing with. Yesterday, our 11 year old
admitted to giving our phone number out! Anyway, I'm sure you have
advisees who aren't sure of their research paths, but perhaps this will be
a topic someone is interested in. I'd be interested in the results! This
is a difficult generation to raise! Maybe it will be a future article for
me if no one else jumps on it.

Laura
