Graduates:

Information you may need. If you plan to TA in a classroom this winter or
spring quarter, you must take and pass the SPEAK test if you have not done
so already. This is a state law so there is no way around this one! :)

TF

Department Administrators and Graduate Chairs or Advisors,

This is to inform you that the SPEAK test for the beginning of Winter
Quarter will be given on Wednesday, January 5th, 2011 at 10:00 am in the
lower level of Gordy Hall room 012 . Please have students come early for
check-in. Please forward this information to anyone who needs to know in
your department.

Please register students by completing the attached form and sending it back
to this email address (bikowski at ohio.edu). You will need the following
information:
1. Your name, department, and contact information (phone, email)
2. Student’s name, last name first please
3. Student’s P-number
4. Student’s Oak email address if available

Only departments can register students. Students cannot register themselves.
We cannot test students who are not registered.

Please inform any of your students who need to take the test to bring their
Ohio University ID and come to the Lower Level of Gordy Hall by 9:45 am on
January 5th. We will not inform students about the test, so please be sure
they are aware of it.

*Who should be tested:*
Any non-native English speaking student the department is considering for a
teaching assistantship during the 2010-11 academic year who has not yet
received English language proficiency clearance for instructional
assignments should be tested. A teaching assistantship refers to any
position in which the person must explain course content to students,
whether in the classroom or a lab.

*How to be cleared for a teaching assignment:*
Clearance for instructional assignments is granted once a student has
achieved a score of 230 or higher (out of 300) on the SPEAK test. Students
are also allowed to teach if they receive a 190 or higher and take a class
concurrently. For more information on the test and Ohio University policies,
please go to: http://www.ohio.edu/linguistics/elip/speak.html

*Testing procedures:*
Your department will be notified by phone or email of the SPEAK test results
and student placements in a course if necessary. The scores will also be
available on SIS on the OENG screen. The Graduate College will contact any
departments with students on TA contracts who do not take the SPEAK test.
The test is administered by the English Language Improvement Program in the
Linguistics Department and is offered every quarter.

Thank you and let me know if you have any questions.
