From bvadakin at gmail.com Thu May 9 12:35:19 2013 From: bvadakin at gmail.com (Brian Vadakin) Date: Thu, 9 May 2013 12:35:19 -0400 Subject: [Honorscommunitycouncil] A message from the HTC Board of Visitors Message-ID: <201FA922-DB3C-437D-BDA2-65E4641F92A8@gmail.com> HCC: I'm writing you today to pass on a message from the President of the HTC Board of Visitors, Victor Roehm. I hope you'll take the time to read it and respond, if interested. On behalf of the 2012-13 executive board, thank you very much for all your participation and help throughout the year. I hope, if you're still at Ohio University, you will be just as active in the group during the 2013-14 academic year. Thank you! Brian Vadakin ??????? Greetings HCC members. Hopefully your summers are off to a good start. I wanted to quickly introduce myself to all of you and to write to you about the Honors Tutorial College Board of Visitors. As some of you may already know, I am the current President of the HTC Board of Visitors. I am a '98 grad of the College having earned my degree in Business Administration. I went on to graduate from the University of Cincinnati College of Law and have been a practicing attorney for the past 11 and a half years. My wife and I currently live in Portland, Oregon. I am one of 13 members of the Board of Visitors, eleven of which are alumni and two are students. We have a diverse group including members in a variety of career fields some of whom were part of the College at its inception along with more recent graduates from the last decade. Pursuant to the Board's constitution and bylaws, the President of HCC serves as a member of the Board of Visitors and your own Brian Vadakin was able to participate in our recent Board meeting in April via teleconference. We are in the midst of many changes on the Board of Visitors. One of those changes was establishing a committee to deal with diversity issues that the College faces. Keith Hawkins has been serving as one of the members of that committee, but with Keith departing for the UK, we will need additional student participants. If you are interested in serving on this important committee which meets bi-monthly, please let me know. Additionally, we are working to make the Society of Alumni & Friends, which is the alumni organization governed by the Board of Visitors, an actual, functioning alumni society. Part of that will include joint student-alumni events. With that in mind, I'd like to get ideas from HCC and your fellow students as to what sort of student-alumni events you would be interested in attending. Are you interested in social events, speeches and panel discussions about current events with HTC alumni who are experts in their fields, career-based functions (ex. a "law day" where we bring back HTC students in law school and various areas of legal practice to talk about their experiences to students considering careers in law, or a "careers in academia" discussion panel) or even panels about relocating to certain parts of the country? I'm happy to listen to any suggestions all of you may have and I'd also ask that HCC consider doing a survey of the rest of the current HTC students (including incoming freshman) to get a sense of what your fellow students would like to see. I am also curious about the interest level of students in tutorials taught by alumni--we have a variety of well qualified alumni many who are academics but some who are successful professionals who have expressed interest and thanks to things like Skype this is a much more realistic possibility than it was a decade ago. Feel free to e-mail me at vicroehm at alumni.ohio.edu with any suggestions you might have or any questions you might have about the Board of Visitors. Sincerely, Victor Roehm -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
