Hi Fellows and List Serve Members:

Sidney Coupet, D.O., MPH, Training in Policy Studies Fellowship Class of 2009-2010, has been selected as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar.  He will work at the University of Michigan conducting research on the impact of international rotations on the health care workforce.  More specifically, Dr. Coupet will look at whether international experiences influence US physicians' choice of specialty or their decision to practice in underserved areas.  Dr. Coupet currently practices at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA.  Dr. Coupet founded Doctors United For Haiti<http://www.dufh.org/> and has been very involved in delivering health care in that country since the earthquake.

Karen Nichols, D.O., Health Policy Fellowship Class of 1995-1996, visited Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, June 23.  According to the AOA Daily Report (6/23/10), Dr. Nichols conducted a "series of advocacy visits with Members of Congress to introduce them to the AOA's incoming president.  . . . (her) schedule includes meetings with Senator Roland Burris (D-IL), Congressman Peter Roskam (R-IL), Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), Congresswoman Melissa Bean (D-IL), and Nancy Ann DeParle, Director of the White House Office of Health Care Reform.  President-elect Nichols also had lunch with Joe Heck, DO, an AOA member who is running for Congress in Nevada.  This evening she will attend a reception hosted by Congressman Roskam before continuing with more visits and meetings tomorrow."

Lorenzo L. Pence, D.O., Health Policy Fellowship Class of 1996-1997, is serving as interim Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV.  Dr. Pence previously served as Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education.  WVSOM's previous Dean, Michael D. Adelman, D.O., J.D., Health Policy Fellowship Class of 1994-1995, is Acting President for WVSOM as of April 2010.  (HPF Activity Update 5/19/10).

Robert Kessler, D.O., Health Policy Fellowship Class of 2001-2002, will join the full-time OMM faculty at the Touro University - Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine as of July 1, 2010.

Kelli Ward, D.O., MPH, Health Policy Fellowship Class of 2002-2003, has been elected president of the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association.  Dr. Ward is a family practitioner in Lake Havasu, Arizona.  According to the AOMA website, "Dr. Ward is the Past President for the Arizona Society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (AzACOFP) and serves on the Arizona Regulatory Board of Physician's Assistants.  She received the Lake Havasu City People's Choice Physician of the Year in 2002. Dr. Ward received the AOMA's "Physician of the Year" Award in 2007."   http://www.az-osteo.org/displayboard.cfm

George Mychaskiw II, D.O., Health Policy Fellowship Class of 2006-2007, has accepted the position Professor and Chair, Department of Anesthesiology at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.  Dr. Mychaskiw formerly was a professor and vice-chair in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, Mississippi.

Robert Hunter, D.O., Health Policy Fellowship Class of 2009-2010, has been elected to membership in the National Academies of Practice.  The NAP represents ten healthcare professions who work together "to advance coordinated, accountable, accessible, affordable healthcare for all."  (http://www.napractice.org/)  The organization produces policy papers widely circulated to policy makers. Dr. Hunter is a medical director, family practitioner, and emergency room physician in Huber Heights, Ohio.
