*Themed session:*

*Title:* ‘Geographies of Recycled Resources’

*Convenor:* Ruth Lane

As natural resources are increasingly over-extended, attention is turning to
the exploitation of recycled resources, especially in the context of
sustainability concerns and rapid urban growth. There are many common
elements between the management of natural resources and recycled resources.
For example there are issues around macro-level regime change and the role
that large institutions play as well as community-based management
approaches that operate at a local scale. There are similar issues around
property rights and the negotiation of equitable access, and both virgin and
recycled resources can potentially be explored from commodity chain and
political economy perspectives. But what patterns, if any, are distinctive
in the use and management of recycled resources? Is it appropriate to simply
borrow theoretical frameworks from natural resource management or do we need
to develop new theoretical understandings? Is there anything inherently
different about the geographies of recycled resources?

Contributions are invited from researchers working on a wide range of
recycled resources, including water, food, timber, plastics, EWaste,
construction waste, mining waste, etc. Contributions addressing conceptual
issues associated with recycling resources are also welcome.

To submit a paper proposal for this session, please send an abstract to Ruth
Lane (Ruth.Lane at monash.edu) by 14 March. Also, when the IAG conference
online abstract submission goes live (hopefully Feb 11), please submit your
abstract online, ticking the session for which you wish to be considered.
(An email will be sent to the IAG email list as soon as the online abstract
submission goes ‘live’ on the conference website.)

Regards

Ruth
