The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor in Geographic Information Science (GIS) and Geospatial Data Science. This is a 9-month (paid over 12 months), full-time academic appointment (non-tenure track) at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor, with opportunities for summer salary through online course instruction.

Responsibilities
The successful applicant will join a world-class research and education environment for GIS and geospatial data science. Primary responsibilities will include developing and teaching classroom-based and online courses in GIS and geospatial data science. The position also involves serving as an advisor of GIS students, particularly students in the growing Professional Science Master's in GIS program: https://psm.illinois.edu/gis. The opportunity to teach non-GIS courses also exists based on the hire's expertise and departmental teaching needs. Engagement in scholarly research, service to the department/college/university is expected.

Qualifications
This position requires experience in college- or university-level teaching. A Ph.D. in GIS, geography, or a closely related field is also required. Interest or experience in education research, curriculum development, current educational technologies, and a strong desire to create new and innovative course materials will enhance an application. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to make an instructional and curricular impact both within the Department and beyond, either through scholarly publications, invited talks, or other related activities involving their discipline, pedagogy and student interactions.

The successful applicant should possess: excellent interpersonal communication skills, a desire to interact with prospective students, excellent organization and time management skills, and demonstrated excellence in teaching and advising.

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The preferred start date is August 16, 2019.
