Here’s three transportation planning opportunities with the City of Columbus, one in GIS.

The transportation planning intern would be for a graduate student or recent master’s program graduate, but others could take an undergraduate.

Transportation Planning Intern

This is a graduate student position in my section (Transportation Planning) and will work directly with me and our transportation planning team. If you are aware of students with a particular interest in multi-modal transportation, thoroughfare planning, community mobility, traffic management, street design, etc., please let them know about this opportunity.

Task Description
•         Receive, review, evaluate, and prioritize traffic calming requests.



•         Engage neighborhoods via surveys, petitions, or in-person meetings to determine appropriate traffic calming approach (enforcement, education, engagement, engineering).



•         Create conceptual traffic calming plans for neighborhoods and promote safer speeds for vehicles, promote bike and pedestrian safety as well as the City's Pace Car program.



•         Research and analysis (quantiative and qualitative), data management, field observations/data collection, mapping and graphics production to support various special projects and transportation planning initiatives (e.g. multimodal throughfare plan, bicycle network plan, etc.), including research of transportation planning best practices, emerging technologies and trends, and development of project specific recommendations or policies.



•         Assist transportation planning staff in coordinating with division engineering staff, other City Departments and partner agencies (e.g. COTA, MORPC, Franklin County) in advancing multimodal transportation objectives, context-sensitive design solutions and safe streets initiatives.



•         Assist staff in research, analysis and recommendations related to school zone designations and associated GIS asset management, Safe Routes to Schools policies and project initiatives, school zone crosswalk criteria development and other related tasks.



Traffic Operations/GIS Intern

This is a graduate student position in the Traffic Operations section and will focus on assisting our GIS specialist with data/asset management and analysis. The position will also provide support to the Transportation Planning section, so students with skills/interests in both GIS and traffic/transportation would be a good fit.

Task Description
•         Assists GIS Analyst in data analysis, report development and geospatial metric reports.

•         Assist in the completion of data mangement quaility control and quality checks, ensuring that field data collection is accruate and follows Department of Technology best practices and Department of Public Service's goals.

•         Assist in the development and completion of data management, field observations/data collection, mapping and graphics production to support various special projects and transportation planning initiatives (e.g. multimodal throughfare plan, bicycle network plan, etc.), including research of transportation planning best practices, emerging technologies and trends, and development of project specific recommendations or policies.


Traffic Engineering Intern

Task Description
•         Assisting in the effort to digitize old signal timing records and archiving said records

•         Assisting the TMC in creating reports and responding to public record requests

•         Assisting the signals group (and GIS group) to get a better handle on our assets and populating/updating the databases/GIS accordingly and performing research into these items

•         Assisting the Freeway Operations/ITS group in getting an overhead structures inventory solidified and an inspection program off the ground

•         Assisting the signal group to help put together work orders for rebuilds/refurbs/revisions by providing data and performing research of as-builts/record plans

•         Performing research for the ITS group related to fiber/cctv work orders and requests
