The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed upon degree completion. Students must be a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or United Kingdom at time of application Students pursuing degrees related to the following are encouraged to apply:
*         Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
*         Biosciences
*         Chemical Engineering
*         Chemistry
*         Civil Engineering
*         Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences
*         Computer and Computational Sciences and Computer Engineering
*         Electrical Engineering
*         Geosciences
*         Industrial and Systems Engineering (technical tracks only)
*         Information Sciences
*         Materials Science and Engineering
*         Mathematics
*         Mechanical Engineering
*         Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
*         Nuclear Engineering
*         Oceanography
*         Operations Research  (technical tracks only)
*         Physics

Eligibility:  NOTE: DO NOT apply for this program UNLESS you REALLY want to work for the DoD.

  *   a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or United Kingdom at time of application,
  *   18 years of age or older as of August 1, 2017
  *   able to participate in summer internships at DoD laboratories,
  *   willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD,
  *   a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of award and,
  *   pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the disciplines listed above.

*Students who are currently Freshman or enrolled in a First Year Associate's Program applicants must report an ACT or SAT Reasoning Test Score. Subject tests are not required. In addition, individuals who apply during their Freshman/First Year must obtain a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale during the fall academic term of their Freshman/First Year. Freshman/First Year Associate's Program applicants will be required to submit an official transcript reflecting their fall academic term grades to establish compliance with this requirement.
**Graduate applicants must have taken the GRE and test scores must be reportable by ETS. Subject tests are not required.

Benefits: $25,000-$38,000/yr in stipend funds; health insurance, $1200 spending allowance; employment post graduation.

*         Summary of Goals (5000c):  Why you want to work for the Department of Defense? How you think that you will benefit from working as part of the DoD civilian workforce?

*         Interests and Research Explanation (5000c): UG: Discuss The factors and experiences that led you to choose your field of study. Specific challenges or problems in your field that most interest you and why.  Grads:  Elaborate on the kinds of research in which you have engaged and in which you would like to engage during your studies as well as during your expected tenure with the Department of Defense (DoD).

*         Community and Volunteer Work (1000c)

*         Leadership Experiences (1000C)

*         Team Work Experiences (1000C)

As a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award approximately 180 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2017, subject to the availability of funds. The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships are awarded to senior undergraduate students and 1st and 2nd year graduate student who are US citizens or nationals and who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest within one of the fifteen following disciplines:

  *   be enrolled in their final year of undergraduate studies, or have completed less than two full-time years of graduate study in the discipline in which they are applying.
  *   General GRE score from the last 5 years.
Benefits: total of $102,000 in stipend funds over the course of their 36-month program tenure.
