Chequamegon-Nicolet Forest Service Project
The College of Natural Resources (CNR) at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point (UWSP) is recruiting for a graduate assistant who will be involved in a project designed to understand visitor and resident perceptions about a landscape-scale effort to restore 37,000 acres of pine barren and northern dry forests. This two-year assistantship, including a 6 week internship for a graduate student at the USFS Northern Research Station (NRS) in Evanston, will entail creating and implementing a landowner survey, on-site visitor surveys, and roving focus groups that will culminate in a master's thesis.
Qualifications
* BS Degree in geography, rural sociology, land use management and/or planning, landscape ecology, forestry or related field with at least a 3.0 GPA in the last two years of your undergraduate degree.
* Interest in learning social science research methods including surveys, focus groups, and other qualitative and quantitative methods, and applying GIS.
Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge and work history in ecological restoration and some use of GIS, those with competitive GRE scores, those with a passionate interest in land use planning and conservation in general, and the human dimensions of resource management in particular.
Terms
Begins September 2015 and runs until May 2017. Assistantship provides about $2,000/month stipend for 20 months, all research expenses, and research-related travel expenses. In addition, out-of-state tuition surcharges are waived for non-Wisconsin residents and students may be eligible for insurance benefits.
