Title: Safeguarding Data Confidentiality: From Deniable Encryption to Secure Deletion

Abstract: Computing devices are widely used today to store and process sensitive or even mission-critical data. Ensuring the confidentiality of this sensitive data is of paramount importance, as data leaks may not only endanger the privacy of device owners but also violate various regulations. To guarantee confidentiality, the data must be protected while it is present on the computing devices (i.e., confidentiality during its lifetime) and should also be rendered irrecoverable after being deleted from the devices (i.e., confidentiality after its lifetime). In this presentation, I will introduce my work on ensuring data confidentiality through plausibly deniable encryption and secure deletion. Additionally, I will discuss my future research plans and how I will contribute to the development of the department.

Bio: Niusen Chen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Michigan Technological University in December 2023. Prior to that, he earned his master's degree from the University of Florida in 2018 and his bachelor's degree from Harbin Institute of Technology at Weihai in 2015. His research focuses on addressing security and privacy issues in Embedded Systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), Autonomous Vehicles, and Cloud Computing. His work has been published in multiple high-impact conferences and journals, including AsiaCCS, IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security (TIFS), SecureCom, and CODASPY. He received the Best Paper Award at EAI AC3 2021 and SmartSP 2024.
