Title: Robust Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) Systems
Abstract
Positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) systems play increasingly vital roles in our daily lives. Safety-of-life applications such as aviation require robust PNT systems that are designed and tested to ensure protection against potential error sources. In this talk, two common error sources are discussed. First, the effects of gravity model errors within an inertial navigation system are characterized. Examples are given demonstrating the impacts of severe gravity environments on an aircraft navigation system. A novel testing framework is presented that is intended to aid system designers and integrators in proving compliance to gravity model requirements in certification standards such as DO-384. A second error source to be discussed is GPS signal faults. Traditionally, GPS-based navigation systems provide integrity against unintentional signal faults such as an atomic clock failure within the satellite. Recent events have highlighted the need to protect against intentional GPS interference such as jamming and spoofing. A brief overview of present and future trends in integrity and GPS interference detection and mitigation will be discussed.
Biography
Tim Needham has over 20 years of experience in academia and industry working with various aspects of Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems. Currently, he is a staff engineer at Northrop Grumman where he focuses on PNT system design and integrity. Tim's Ph.D. research focused on investigating the integrity aspects of gravity modeling errors on GNSS-aided inertial navigation systems used in civil aviation. He received the 2022 William E. Jackson award for his dissertation. Previously, Tim has worked with high-accuracy GPS systems, instrument landing systems, and sense and avoid technologies. In addition, he served on RTCA SC-159 Working Group 2C (WG2C) and coauthored DO-384 Appendix O. Tim received a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Ohio University in 2003, 2008, and 2022, respectively.
