ABSTRACT
Complementing terrestrial communication networks with non-terrestrial networks (NTN) in general and high-altitude platform station (HAPS), in particular, is among the major innovative initiatives of the next generation of wireless mobile networks. Such compound networks, also known as vertical heterogeneous networks (VHetNets), are expected to offer essential services to ground systems and provide connectivity in many applications, such as integrated communication, computing, sensing, and positioning. Unlike a conventional HAPS, which targets broad coverage for remote areas or disaster recovery, we envision next-generation VHetNets to have the necessary capabilities to address the high capacity, low latency, and computing requirements, especially for highly populated metropolitan areas. In this talk, I will briefly highlight some of the key characteristics of HAPS, potential opportunities, and use cases, followed by a few proofs of concept results.
BIOGRAPHY
Animesh Yadav, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Technology (ECET) at Minnesota State University, Mankato, MN, USA. His research interests include 6G and beyond networks, machine learning for communication systems, space-air-ground integrated networks (SAIGN), and enabling technologies such as mmWave, terahertz, massive MIMO, and intelligent reconfigurable surfaces. He is an IEEE Senior Member and is currently an Associate Editor for IEEE Communications Letters and Frontiers in Communications and Networks. Dr. Yadav received his master's in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, India, and a doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Oulu, Finland.
