Charlie Young is currently the Director of Business Development for the Center of Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME) in the College of Engineering for The Ohio State University. He directs projects and pursues collaborations with students, faculty, government and industry. CDME specializes in applied engineering by performing real-world projects to improve technology readiness and workforce readiness for manufacturing. Prior to working at CDME, Charlie retired from ABB in 2016 as Vice President & Global Managing Director for the Measurements and Analytics Business Unit. He was responsible for the $1.2B P&L and all aspects of the business which included manufacturing. Charlie held multiple roles during a 32-year career with ABB in process automation including service and projects, sales, sales management and P&L Management. Charlie graduated from The University of Virginia in 1984 with a BS in Chemical Engineering.

This presentation will cover the capabilities of CDME, as well for opportunities for collaboration with researchers, and opportunities for students.

In the past six years, CDME has collaborated with commercial, academic, and government partners on over 520 product development projects for more than 150 different businesses. The center employs two dozen full time engineers to execute projects while supervising and mentoring undergraduate interns. CDME has a wide swath of capabilities in most aspects of advanced manufacturing. The Center's ITAR Compliant facility has nearly $20M in manufacturing equipment, including automation, software, data/analytics, artificial intelligence, robotics, control systems, injection molding, extrusion, imaging, machining, full-scale 3D printers for metal and polymers, electronics, sensors, board design and manufacturing, die casting and foundry, presses, and material characterization.

CDME has established a Student Experiential Program that they use with all their projects. CDME's student program allows interns to work on projects that best suit their academic background and career goals. These projects provide undergraduate students with hands-on project experiences that require overcoming real-world, customer-facing consequences such as time deadlines, milestones achievements, ROI deliverables, quality requirements, and budget constraints. CDME has employed more than 300 undergraduate students and, currently, CDME has 135 undergraduate paid, part-time interns employed this semester. They work part-time during the school year and full-time in the summer. They are also encouraged to seek internships and co-ops directly with companies funding the projects they are being mentored on, then return to CDME to continue project work when classes resume.
