NASA Internships at Glenn Research Center
The NASA Internship Project (historically referred to as Lewis’ Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Project or LERCIP) at Glenn Research Center (GRC) offers students an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a variety of technical and professional disciplines. In order to be considered for an internship, applicants must be rising college freshmen through graduate school students and/or secondary education school teachers.
NASA Internship Program at Glenn Research Center
Program Description:
NASA offers an Agency-wide college internship program that provides a 10-week summer and 16-week fall and spring paid internship opportunity for students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); and for students of non-STEM majors that lend support to the NASA mission. During their internship students work at the NASA Glenn Research Center facilities under the guidance of mentors, while engaging in authentic NASA-related, mission-based R&D and career-related activities. The NASA Internship Program educational component allows students to attend and participate in a variety of planned activities from professional development workshops and the annual GRC Career Showcase. Additionally, the students present their final research results in a poster session to a broad audience and summarize their results in a final written report. NASA Internships provide hands-on practical experiences that challenge and inspire students. Thus, the program complements and expands on students’ classroom education and offers two sessions during the summer, beginning in early-to-mid June and concluding in mid-to-late August.
Eligibility:
For consideration to participate in this internship project, an applicant must be a U.S citizen with 3.0 GPA, and either a full-time student pursuing a baccalaureate or higher degree in a STEM or business-related field at an accredited college/university or attending an accredited 2-year college/university, or a College-bound graduate (high school senior). A selected student must begin internship on one of the scheduled start dates listed below.
Summer 2018 Start/End Dates:
· Session #1: June 4 – August 10, 2018
· Session #2: June 11 – August 17, 2018
Salary:
Stipends are based on students’ academic levels at start of their internships. Undergraduate stipend - $6,000; Graduate stipend - $7,500; Teacher stipend - $10,000.
The NASA Internship Program at Glenn Research Center does not provide any housing allocation. Participants are responsible for arranging their own housing and transportation. The program provides a one time travel reimbursement of up to $500 dollars to selected applicants who, also, are eligible for the reimbursement.
Application:
The season for students to apply for an internship within NASA’s One Stop Shopping Initiative (OSSI) website is from November to March. The application deadlines are noted at the OSSI LaunchPad site<http://intern.nasa.gov/>. Following creation of his/her profile, a student can directly apply for up to 15 internship opportunities at Glenn Research Center and other NASA Centers across the country. Due to the large number of applicants, only candidates who are selected for positions will be notified by late April. The selections are based on GRC project/program needs and budget.
Sixteen-week internships are offered during the Fall (beginning in early September through mid-December) and Spring (from mid-January through late April). Application deadlines for Fall and Spring Sessions can be found on the OSSI website.
