Hi all.
We had our first confirmed nesting terrapins earlier today in Cape May NJ. There had been some evidence of nesting in the local area in the days prior, but the nesting season seems to have officially started for us as of today. Hope you all are well, and have a great field season.

Hi Jordan,
Looks like the season is off to a good start. All the nests our project protects are laid in or near the sand traps or hatchery boxes on several holes of the golf courses.
For some unknown reason road killed terrapins are not common on the Diamond Causeway. In all my 33 years of driving back and forth to the UGA Marine Science Campus I have seen very few, as compared to the Tybee Road or Jekyll causeway. A number of mammal species aren't so lucky.
My best,
Crawfish

Jim,
Thanks for that update from Skidaway. Are those of females utilizing the sand traps or on Diamond Causeway as well?

All,
The first documented adult female road encounters were observed on the Downing-Musgrove causeway between Brunswick and Jekyll Island, Georgia, on 26 April 2021. Today, 3 May 2021, saw the northward progression of nesting season with the first female road encounter on the U.S. Highway 80 causeway between Wilmington and Tybee islands.
