CULTURAL IMMERSION WITH THE NAVAJO NATION
May 9th - 17th, 2020

Diversity Studies students! Looking for an unusual transformative experience?
Join us in the "Cultural Immersion with the Navajo Nation" early summer Study Away program.

To be invited to the Navajo Nation to learn from the People themselves is is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Most Native American tribes do not open themselves up to non-Natives because of understandable trust issues. Our group will live, work and learn side-by-side 24/7 with the Navajo People for the duration learning about their contemporary and traditional culture and history.

Excursions will be to places such as the Grand Canyon, Dinosaur Tracks, Newspaper Rock, Coal Mine Canyon, among others where we will learn the cultural significance and history of these places sacred to the Navajo. Activities include learning about Navajo Language preservation, environmental challenges, traditional foods and music, sheep shearing, puberty ceremonies; a highlight of the trip is a Traditional Sweat Lodge experience led by Elders of the Navajo Nation.

Students register for a 3 credit class, choosing between EDCS 1011 Introduction to Diversity Studies (Tier II) or EDCS 4001 Democracy & Diversity (Tier III). (Both classes count towards the Diversity Studies Certificate program as well.)

Priority Deadline is Dec. 15th, with the final application deadline of Feb. 1st.
