[Currentcse] THIS IMPACTS YOU! Fw: Opposing the Tax Reform Bill: What can you do?

Hi folks,

Our dean's office sent this out. There is an Ohio bill that is being sponsored and considered that would tax GA stipends as if they were earned income. See below about how it would impact you.

If this frustrates or outrages you, then please take some action--phone calls, texts, faxes, etc., and/or organize a protest, etc. At the bottom of the email there are links and steps you can take as well.

The lack of support for public education whether it be K-12 or Higher Education by these legislatures is appalling. Of course, it is premised on the idea that a democracy is stronger with well-educated citizens...but we also know that an authoritarian banking style of education serves to keep power (and other human goods) unequally distributed in order to benefit the few and uphold the status quo.

Dear Patton College Faculty –

You are probably aware that there is a tax bill currently under consideration by legislators. Currently, a provision in the proposed bill calls for graduate students who receive tuition waivers to be taxed on those waivers as if they are income.

That means, at Ohio University where our comprehensive graduate tuition for out of state students is $8,718, students enrolled in two semesters annually who receive a stipend of $15,500 would be taxed at an income base of $32,936, yet the actual income available for covering living expenses is the $15,500 stipend.

Forbes magazine published an article on November 7 lamenting the effects of this proposed tax bill. It is available online at: https://www.forbes.com/sites/startswithabang/2017/11/07/the-gop-tax-plan-will-destroy-graduate-education/#443304e13d2f

I urge you to become familiar with the bill, particularly how it affects graduate education, and consider contacting legislators such as Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown. I understand that multiple phone calls are more effective than email correspondence.

Our Ohio University Graduate Student Senate has prepared items that you may be interested in seeing (forwarded below from Maria Modayil, President of GSS).

Kind regards,

Hello everyone, Congress has proposed a tax reform bill that will have a HUGE impact on institutions of higher education and graduate-professional students. Please take the time to view the Presentation below that details the issues that may arise.

We have also included letters to deliver to school administrators, advisors and other student groups that will be affected (particularly non-traditional undergraduate students).

Please join us in a Call Congress day this Wednesday to let our representation know we oppose the proposed tax plan.

For at least the next two weeks, we will need everyone sharing posts, tweeting, and emailing everyone you know who may be affected. Speaker Paul Ryan has stated that Congress is on track to have this tax reform passed before Thanksgiving, that means we all need to make our voices heard immediately!
