Hi CSE folks!

I wanted to pass along this information from a doctoral student on campus. They are following up with work that was started the last year or two to improve the conditions for working graduate students, specifically those who are GAs/TAs, etc...but not exclusively.

If you care about any of the issues listed below, consider contacting Elliot and/or attending the information meeting on September 6th. You can take a leadership role, or you can be a supporter and/or participant, or neither. This definitely connects with many of the things we study.

Feel free to pass along to other graduate students and/or their listservs cyou think might have an interest.

Best, --Theo

Subject: Looking for grad students interested in unionizing

I'm looking for any other graduate students who would be interested in unionizing for better benefits, and I'm hoping you can forward this message to them.

This summer some graduate students from across the university and myself have been building an organization called the OU Graduate Employee Organization (OU GEO), and our goal is to improve working conditions for graduate employees across campus.

We have four demands:
1. Increase subsidies for health insurance for students with assistantships to match our peer institutions. (OU grad assistants are paying FAR MORE for health insurance than all of our peers.)
2. Reduce and subsidize the graduate general fee.
3. Gain graduate parental leave (to match half of our peer institutions).
4. Increase support for international students.

You can read about these goals in more detail and see some of the research we have done on our peer institutions on our website: tinyurl.com/ohiougeo<http://tinyurl.com/ohiougeo>. You can also find us on Facebook at fb.me/ohiougeo<http://fb.me/ohiougeo>. (Please like us!)

We are currently trying to build membership in the group to show that graduate students really want these four demands met. Once the semester starts, we'll be passing around a petition to deliver to President Nellis, and our next steps will be based on the university's response.

We are looking for people to (1) sign membership cards to show they support these demands, (2) help get the word out about OU GEO, and (3) help us pass around the petition in a few weeks.

If someone would like to meet to hear more about the group, please email me at elliotnlong at gmail.com<mailto:elliotnlong at gmail.com>. We'll be having an info session (with pizza) during the second week of the semester, if you'd be interested in joining us.

We could also use help recruiting during orientation week, if you'd like to pitch in!

The info session:

Join us Wednesday, September 6th at 7:00 p.m. for pizza and conversation!

We will be gathering the second week of the semester for a meet-and-greet and an introduction to the Graduate Employee Organization. All graduate students working for the university in some capacity are welcome to attend. The meeting will kick off with pizza, soda, and time to socialize; then we'll provide an overview of the GEO and answer any questions you may have.

You do not need to be a member of the GEO in order to attend this event.

Location: Alden 319 (Friends of the Libraries Room).

Thank you for your time,
