Hi folks, the email below shares an announcement of a cool event this coming Friday, Dec. 4th at 6:30 p.m. I am the faculty advisor for this student organization and they've done a good job bringing in this guest speaker--which sounds like it will be very informative and critical, but also with humor.

There is a link to the event towards the bottom as well.

A good way to close out the week! --Jaylynne

Subject: Guest Speaker Dec. 4 - Tamara Winfrey Harris - Stereotypes

Hi, there,

My name is Marlena Scott and I am editor-in-chief of student-run publication The InterActivist, a progressive magazine that covers activism, environmental issues, social issues and the like.

This Friday, in partnership with Feminist Equality Movement (FEM), we will host Tamara Winfrey Harris- contributor to popular feminist publication Bitch Media (https://bitchmedia.org/) and author of "The Sisters Are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative of Black Women in America."

Harris will discuss in her talk "Mad Women, Rump Shakers and Bad Mamas" how age-old stereotypes like the Jezebel, Sapphire, Mammy and the Matriarch persist in 21st century media and how they influence the lives of black women. Harris is speaking at 6:30 p.m. in Schoonover 145.

For more on her work, Harris' website is below:

We are working to get the word out in hopes that Tamara's talk brings perspective to a wide audience. This is an incredible opportunity for students to engage in frank, open language and humor to work through complex and essential subject matter.

It would be extremely helpful if you are willing to mention it to your classes that you consider relevant, or to offer extra credit for students who attend. I am happy to come and give a short talk about it if you'd like.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Beyond sending the word out, I hope you will consider attending!

Marlena Scott
