Please see below for an opportunity to do some organizing around the issue of water protection in this area (specifically as it regards the impact of fracking/injection wells). The announcement below also encourages you to share the announcement with others you know who are interested in this environmental and social justice issue. --jh

Subject: Democracy School - Call for Applications

Dear Melissa,

Please send the attached flier and application form to everybody on the UCM mailing list.

The Bill of Rights Committee and Democracy Over Corporations are co-sponsoring a DEMOCRACY SCHOOL in Albany on Friday, December 5 (evening 6-9 pm) and Saturday, December 6 (9am-4pm). The instructors are organizers with the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund. CELDF is the parent organization of the Bill of Rights Committee. Without them Issue 7 could never have happened.

But there is much more work to be done to protect our water.

I am personally hoping to recruit activists for the DEMOCRACY SCHOOL who might be willing to help us stop the injection wells from penetrating deeper into Southeast Ohio. As you know, the US Corps of Engineers is planning to build a receiving dock in Portland, Meigs County. We must act quickly and concertedly---before they invest any more in infrastructure---if we really intend to stop them. We need community support from all townships in Athens County and in neighboring counties.

Margaret Mead famously said: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

If you received this message but can't attend the Democracy School yourself, please consider making a donation for scholarships for people who can devote their time to participate in this important event. Make out your check to APJN (Appalachian Peace and Justice Network) and then write Democracy School in the memo line, and mail it to me: Dick McGinn, 44 Graham Drive, Athens, OH 45701).

Also, everybody can help by sending the flier and application for to persons you believe to be committed to protecting our environment.

Thank you for all you do for the community!
