Please see below for an opportunity for students who are interested in rehabilitation counseling.

Students are needed to participate in disability simulations in local restaurants and other settings in order to provide feedback on accessibility for people with disabilities.

Interested students can contact Larry Jageman at jageman at ohio.edu

Additional information is below.

Natalie F. Williams, M.S.
Doctoral Student
President - Chi Sigma Iota, Alpha Chapter
Ohio University

--------------------------------------------

At the Challenged by Choice disability simulations we could use 2 students in
each disability group (physical disability, communication disability, learning
disability, and mental illness) to do the following:
1. Two student in each disability group to attend our "Challenged by Choice" 12
noon Thursday May 17 at the Ponderosa Restaurant on East State St. to help
orient 2-3 persons accepting a disability in their discipline on what they have
to do in assuming their disability for the afternoon. They may ask the person
assuming the simulation to wear some restraint equipment that simulates a
physical disability and use adaptive equipment that a person with this
disability would normally use. A person simulating a physical disability may use
a mitten on the dominant hand, an arm sling on the dominant arm, a rubber arm
band that restricts arm use, a leg brace, crutches, walker, or wheel chair. A
communication disorder might be simulated with a marshmellow or a couple large
hard candies in the mouth, or wear ear plugs to impede hearing, or be
inarticulate stammering on specific initial letter sounds for each word spoken
starting with those letter sounds, or imitate a high pitched voice disorder.
Learning disabilities and mental illness simulations will be discussed with
those student assistants in a separate message.
2. The same two students are to be available to go with the person doing the
disability simulation for the afternoon and provide assistance to that
individual as needed or assist other persons engaging the disabled person in
their interactions if needed.
3. The same two students are to give a 2 minute explanation during the evening
"Disabilities Speak" session at the Athens Community Center 6-8 p.m. on what
each of them had to do to assist their simulated disabled person they shadowed
for the afternoon in coping with their responsibilities that day.
4. Two different students can orient people arriving at 5-6 p.m. for the evening
"Disabilities Speak" session at the Athens Community Center to assume a
disability for the evening as they register, walk to their table, pick up food,
eat, talk to their table mates, listen to the speakers, converse about what they
heard, and while visiting the agency information tables.
5. Two additional students could set up and man an information booth with
pamphlets, and/or laptop power point presentation, and/or exhibit adaptive
equipment at 5-8 p.m. that evening at the Athens Community Center to inform the
public on services at Ohio U. that are available to help persons with that type
of disability.
6. Any and all students in the organizations are invited to the evening 5-8 p.m.
"Disabilities Speak" session where 2 persons in each of 4 disability groups who
simulated a disability will share for 3 minutes each. Then 2 persons living with
each of the disabilities will explain for 3 minutes about the complications they
are dealing with. Then 2 student assistants will share for 2 minutes about the
direct or on-call assistance they provided that afternoon. And, 2 service
agencies provide 2 minutes of explanation about their agency services and invite
people to their information booths.

Please forward this to the two organizations and to those persons who are
volunteering to help on May 17 and to all the membership who may attend the
evening "Disabilities Speak" session. You might encourage professors to invite
their students to attend for special credit if they write a paper on what they
learned during their assistance or in their attendance at the "Challenged by
Choice" program.

Encourage your student leaders or those who will be assisting to email me at
jageman at ohio.edu<mailto:jageman at ohio.edu> or call me at 591-3737 to discuss their plans and our
"Challenged by Choice" plans by the Athens Commission on Disabilities. We have
some simulation equipment that may be used in the simulations during the
afternoon and evening sessions, but we encourage the students to access their
resources as well.

Once you know the names and email addresses of the students who will be
assisting let me know and I may initiate some communications directly to them,
but I will copy those messages also to each of you.

Thank you for all that you are doing to help our community public and your
students to grow their information base on how to understand, communicate,
accept, accommodate, support, and encourage persons who have a disability.

Sincerely,
Larry Jageman
