This year’s IEW will also celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Ohio University Center for International Studies, which began with African Studies in 1964. International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. It is part of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ efforts to promote programs that prepare American students for a global and changing environment and also attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.</span><o:p></o:p></p><p><span style='font-family:"Calibri Light","sans-serif"'>________________________________________<br><br><strong><span style='font-family:"Calibri Light","sans-serif"'>EVENTS</span></strong></span><o:p></o:p></p><p><span style='font-family:"Calibri Light","sans-serif"'>Each day of the week is set to feature a different part of the world, complete with student and faculty panel discussions and resources to help students reach the rest of the world. On Saturday the 15th, the week will start off with the already sold-out International Dinner hosted by the International Student Union, followed by three-time Grammy-nominated Cuban music group, Tiempo Libre performing at Templeton Blackburn Memorial Auditorium Sunday, November 16 at 7:30pm.</span><o:p></o:p></p><p><span style='font-family:"Calibri Light","sans-serif"'>Monday will feature African Studies and include a film screening of Moolaade, a 2014 film that brought international attention to cultural gendered practices in Africa. Monday morning there will be a Photo Contest Opening hosted by the Office of Education Abroad, which will display imagines submitted by students, faculty, staff and alumni. The photographs will demonstrate the theme “What International Education Means to Me.” Asian and Southeast Asian studies will be highlighted on Tuesday of International Education Week. At noon, Baker Center 240 will host a faculty and student Panel that will extensively cover OHIO’s ongoing Tsunami Relief Project led by Chris Thompson. OHIO alum, faculty and students will share the experiences they’ve had with the project. Wednesday will focus on Latin America. Events will include Minas Music, a Bossa Nova Band, as well as a panel on Latin American Studies and the Tropical Disease institute in Ecuador. Wednesday will also feature the keynote speaker, Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, who will speak Wednesday about his experience as a Palestinian doctor. Dr. Izzeldin lost three of his daughters during the Gaza War and has since become an advocate for peace. Thursday will feature both International Development Studies and Communication and Development Studies. The day will feature a Student Study Abroad Panel where students will students will reflect on international internships and study abroad experiences.
