Counselor Education Doctoral Students,
The Youngstown State University (YSU) Counseling Program is now accepting applications for a doctoral student in Counselor Education who will begin a doctoral-level Counselor Education internship in our CACREP-accredited program in the Fall 2026 semester and/or Spring 2027 semester. The applicant must be enrolled in their doctoral counselor education internship course at their institution (during the time of the internship) and have an agreement with their counselor education program to be designated as an intern at YSU.
The YSU Counseling Program is an on-campus/face-to-face program with CACREP-accredited options in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, Addiction Counseling, and College Counseling/Student Affairs. We are located in beautiful downtown Youngstown, Ohio (located between Cleveland and Pittsburgh).
The doctoral internship can include both teaching and clinical counseling responsibilities. The intern will be responsible for the following: teaching at least one course during fall and/or fall-spring semesters; attending faculty, department, college meetings, and program events (e.g., CSI induction ceremony, new student orientation, program recruitment, etc.); participating in applicant interviews; and serving on program and/or college committees. Interns may gain experience in counseling and supervision at our on-site Community Counseling Clinic.
The intern will receive mentoring from program faculty to enhance their teaching, research, and service. The intern should be a current doctoral student in a counselor education program and will be selected based on a match between the counseling experience and course coverage needs of the program, scholarship and service experiences, recommendations, and potential to contribute to the counseling program through their work with faculty and students.
Interested Counselor Education doctoral students should email a cover letter (indicating the semester(s) that you will be enrolled in an internship course at your institution), a copy of your curriculum vitae, and the names/contact information of three references to Dr. Jake Protivnak, Counseling Program Director, at jjprotivnak at ysu.edu<mailto:jjprotivnak at ysu.edu> by Friday, January 16th, 2026. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
