The U.S. is among the top countries that receive international students because of its high-quality education, diversity and global labor market (Batalova & Israel, 2021). Therefore, the number of enrolled international students increases every day, especially enrollment in mental health counseling master's programs across the country. (Lertora & Croffie, 2020). While a significant representation of international counseling students has been seen within the past couple of years, the population has received limited attention in counselor education and supervision, especially regarding their personal and professional needs and expectations related to student visa limitations and licensing procedures (Qi et al., 2019).

Consequently, this presentation will discuss previous research and provide knowledge on international students' experiences, explore personal and professional barriers faced by international students enrolled in mental health counseling master's programs, and provide suggestions on how to support this group and advocate for them.

Meet Nouna Jalilzadeh
Dr. Nouna Jalilzadeh is an Assistant Professor at St. John's University, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Board Certified Counselor, EMDR Certified Therapist and Clinical Supervisor in the state of New York.

Dr. Jalilzadeh provides services to a diverse clientele but primarily serves clients with a history of unresolved and complicated traumas. Her research interests include diversity, multicultural competence and social justice, with an emphasis on trauma, marginalized identities and intersectionality within counseling, counselor education and supervision. At the age of 55, I found myself facing a mental health crisis. I had spent the previous 35 years of my life focused on achieving career success while I worked in educational and corporate settings, both in the U.S. and abroad.
