The National Rehabilitation Counseling Association (NRCA) is the oldest professional organization representing rehabilitation counselors. NRCA is devoted to facilitating the fulfillment of human potential and promoting global understanding of inclusivity, and the impact of disability.

NRCA is pleased to announce the 2021 Conference on Social Justice and Disability with an in-person sessions in Chicago, IL, and virtual option available. Rehabilitation professionals, educators, administrators, researchers, and other stakeholders are invited to submit a presentation proposal. Proposals should have a practical focus and may address a specific area of rehabilitation counseling practice, research, education, best practices, or emerging issues. This symposium is designed to encourage participants to expand their understanding of social justice and disability in relation to disability, including counseling techniques, education practices, research, and resources.

Please note, at this time we are planning an in-person symposium with virtual option. For those attending in-person, all necessary precautions will be taken to ensure participants’ safety. In the event it becomes unfeasible to hold an in-person event, NRCA will again offer a completely virtual event. If as a presenter, you need to present virtually, please note this in your proposal.

Possible Social Justice Topics Include:

  *   Access to healthcare
  *   Overcoming barriers to employment, pay equity, community resources, etc.
  *   Societal barriers (e.g., stigma, racism, ableism)
  *   Inclusivity and diversity in education
  *   Social justice issues of sexual and gender minorities
  *   Lack of socially inclusive images in media
  *   Advocacy in Action: Intervention examples (local, state, national, international)
  *   Equal rights for people with disabilities (e.g., civil, voting, legislative, policy)
  *   Social justice at a systems level (e.g., police reform, legislative, policy changes)
  *   Advocacy intervention models/research
  *   Preparing counselors in social justice advocacy
  *   Trauma informed and inclusive counseling practices

Please Note: NRCA anticipates CORA site visitor training will take place in conjunction with the symposium. Please stay tuned for more details from CORA.

Please note: Handouts are the responsibility of the presenter(s). Handouts must be available in accessible formats: large print, braille, and digital. NRCA will provide LCD projector, and screen for viewing, if requested. Each presenter is required to register for the conference.
