What a joy it has been to serve on the ASGW board for three years as President-Elect, President, and Past-President! I love ASGW for the caring connections that happen within it, and for our focus on mentoring new leaders. The ASGW board has been intentional about bringing diversity to our leadership team so that many voices and perspectives can be heard. I’m proud of the work of the Special Initiatives Committee that produced the resource Ten Strategies to Intentionally Use Group Work to Transform Hate, Facilitate Courageous Conversations, and Enhance Community Building. This was ASGW’s response to the deadly manifestation of hate in Charlottesville. Look for this resource on ASGW’s website.
I hope to see all of you at our conference in Puerto Rico – the choice of location was again motivated by ASGW’s focus on group work and social justice. As I leave the board, I am confident that ASGW is in great hands! I’d like to thank all of my colleagues on the board for their support and hard work, with special thanks to outgoing president, Chris McCarthy, and incoming President Ana Puig. Go Groups!!

Christine Suniti Bhat, PhD, LPC, LSC (Ohio)
Past-President, ASGW, 2018-2019
Professor, Counselor Education, OHIO University

The ASGW Special Initiatives Committee is planning a day of service for ASGW members on January 29, 2020 (the day before the conference begins). The day of service will be tailored around the expressed needs of a specific group in Puerto Rico. The details of this event are still being coordinated. It is anticipated that the initiative will be centered around a PreK – 12 school where ASGW volunteers will collaboratively provide service to students, teachers, and staff.
There will be a limited number of ASGW members who can be assigned to this initiative. ASGW members who are interested in contributing their expertise during this day of service should contact Lorraine Guth, Co-Chair of the Special Initiatives Committee, at lguth at iup.edu<mailto:lguth at iup.edu> to obtain more information.

Take Care of Each Other: Your Co-leader and You

Madeleine M. Stevens<mailto:ms222706 at ohio.edu>, LPC, NCC
PhD student, Counselor Education and Supervision
Ohio University

My favorite aspect of clinical work is the building of unique therapeutic relationships with each of my clients. It is a privilege to be a part of their personal development and, having been a client myself, I understand how important trust is in the clinical relationship. We know trust and cohesion in group counseling, both member-leader, and member-member, is a strong predictor of successful group outcomes (Yalom & Leszcz, 2005). Many group leaders focus on building a trusting group environment, and we take great care in attending to the relationships among members. But do we pay sufficient attention to the co-leader relationship?
Effective co-leadership promotes group cohesion (Kivlighan et al., 2019), and authentic leadership and effective risk-taking is enhanced when co-leaders communicate with and trust each other (Atieno Okech & Kline, 2006). However, in my experience as a new clinician, constraints such as availability, clinical interests, and levels of expertise influence the pairing of group leaders. Thus, we may often miss the mark when it comes to this most critical component in building cohesive group environments.
In my growth as a group counselor and future counselor educator, I have realized the importance of honest and intentional self-awareness. I tune into my emotional responses and use prompts to help me process my co-leadership experiences. Further, I have realized that regular and honest discussions with my co-leaders are essential, and should be the norm, rather than the exception that is utilized when things go wrong. Here are some prompts I have found helpful when processing with my co-leaders.

  * What do I think went well during group as far as our co-leadership dynamic? At what points (if any) did I feel like we were out of sync?
  * Did I think my co-leader glossed over or spent too much time on one group member’s story? Did a dynamic of individual counseling with just one member appear during group?
  * In what ways did I try to display support to my co-leader during group? In what ways did I display an honest challenge or respectful confrontation with my co-leader? What was my co-leaders reaction to these instances?
  * Invite my co-leader to comment on how I managed a challenging group member or emotional moment. Provide space for constructive feedback and my co-leader’s perspective of the situation.
  * Ask permission to share with my co-leader one instance I admired about his or her leadership during group as well as one piece of constructive feedback.
Group research calls for ample space in the co-leader relationship for interpersonal processing, and I believe it is imperative that we set a strong precedent of teamwork, trust, and respect for group members to follow. Whether I am co-leading a group as a licensed professional counselor, co-teaching a master’s course with a faculty member, or leading a skills training with a colleague, I take seriously my co-leader partnership. Not every co-leader pairing can be a match made in heaven, but it is possible for co-leaders to take care of their relationship and build a foundation of support for each other.
