Position Available:    Assistant/Associate Professor of Counselor Education (tenure line)

Beginning:     Fall Semester 2019

Appointment Conditions:

The College of Education at Penn State seeks to strengthen its faculty in the area of Counselor Education and is particularly interested in identifying candidates with interests and expertise in either school counseling or mental health prevention/intervention in communities and schools.

Applicants should have a record promising success in teaching, supervision, and research, along with a primary professional identity as a counselor educator. Applicants seeking appointment at the Associate Professor rank should have demonstrated competence in the aforementioned areas commensurate with that rank.

This is a tenure-track, 36-week appointment with the possibility of supplementary summer appointments in research and/or teaching.  Counselor Education at Penn State includes CACREP accredited programs in School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Career Counseling, Rehabilitation and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, and a Ph.D. program in Counselor Education and Supervision.  Penn State has a strong commitment to the diversity of its workforce.  We encourage applications from individuals of diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

1.     Conduct a systematic program of research, writing, and other scholarly activities in counselor education, with an emphasis on issues involving school counseling or clinical mental health prevention/intervention in communities and schools.

2.     Pursue individually or with others relevant externally funded research.

3.     Teach graduate courses in Counselor Education, advise students in M.Ed. and Ph.D. programs, and openness to potentially teaching undergraduates in the associated Rehabilitation and Human Services program.

4.     Serve on Department, College, and University committees as appropriate.

5.     Engage in active service and leadership in the Counselor Education profession.

Required Qualifications:

  1.  Earned doctorate in Counselor Education from a CACREP-accredited program or with faculty experience in a CACREP accredited program. ABD applicants must have completed their degree prior to first day of employment.

2.     Demonstrated commitment to high quality teaching and advising students, including through the use of modern distance education technologies.

3.     Eligible for appropriate Counselor license and/or certification.

4.     Evidence of commitment to diversity, social justice, equity, and access in research and teaching.

5.     Evidence of an articulated line of research and publications in school counseling and/or clinical mental health counseling.

6.     Evidence of successful teaching potential.

7.     Evidence of involvement in Counselor Education organizations.

8.     Evidence of commitment to collegiality and collaboration.

Desired Qualifications:

  1.  A record of scholarly contributions on topics related to school counseling or clinical mental health prevention/intervention in communities and schools.
  2.  A record of effective teaching and advising of graduate students.
  3.  Demonstrated involvement in professional counseling associations.
  4.  Interest in and experience with grants.

Counselor Education Program

Counselor Education at Penn State offers professional preparation at the master's degree level for qualified persons wishing to become school counselors, clinical mental health counselors, rehabilitation and clinical mental health counselors, and career counselors. At the Ph.D. level, the Counselor Education and Supervision degree prepares individuals to become university faculty members, researchers, and supervisors. All curriculums blend research based didactic experience with extensive supervised practical application experiences to develop the highest quality professionals. Numbers of admissions in all programs are maintained at levels that allow for quality advisement and mentoring of students by faculty.
