Education Cuts Will Impact School Counselors!

Background

The White House officially released its FY18 federal budget on Tuesday, May 23, 2017. The Washington Post reports that President Trump's proposed education budget would eliminate all funding for the Student Support and Academic Enrichments (SSAE) grant program (Title IV, Part A), a federal program that just received its first appropriation last year. The SSAE program is a block grant intended to help school districts provide a well-rounded education by funding school-based mental health programs, school counseling programs, and drug and violence prevention programs.

For the current budget year, SSAE received $400 million to sustain school districts nationwide. Compared to the need for such programs, this is merely a drop in the bucket. The American Counseling Association is concerned about the administration’s proposal, and we have urged Congress to reject the President’s budget and fund SSAE at its authorized level of $1.65 billon.
