I am writing to share information about my summer Dissertation Preparation and Research Seminar - EDAD 8901 that I will be offering again for four Saturdays during the first term of the summer session.  These will be intensive working sessions for students who wish to spend time moving forward on their writing this summer. EDAD 8901: Dissertation Preparation & Research Seminar - Summer - 2017

Course Description: EDAD 8901–Dissertation Preparation & Research Seminar:

This dissertation preparation course is designed to facilitate doctoral students advancing to the next phase of their dissertation work.   Students will be exposed to activities that are appropriate to where they are in their dissertation work.

New this session:  Students will complete this session with a preliminary template for their dissertation.

 Potential topics may include the following topics:
•              Organizing the Dissertation Process
•              Academic Writing and Writing Originality
•              Strategies for Preparing for Comprehensive Examinations
•              Dissertation proposal (Ch. 1, 2 & 3) and Full Dissertation development (Ch. 4 & 5)
•              Understanding the IRB Process
•              Literature Review Development
•              Data Collection Organization & Support
•              Coding and Data Analysis
•              Development of Findings, Conclusions and Implications
•              Preparation and packaging the final dissertation

The class will be organized into small groups of similarly situated doctoral designed to support workshop components for the class.  Each individual student will develop personal goals for course completion.

Class session dates, time and location:  May 20th, June 3rd, June 17th, June 24th -McCracken Hall – 3rd Floor Four Saturday’s from - 9am – 4:30/5pm.

Course goals and student objectives:  The goals and objectives of the course are to address and to provide effective, learning opportunities and student experiences regarding the following topics:

·      Learn the steps involved in the dissertation process
·      Work on organizing a format for the dissertation process
·      Develop draft and final dissertation proposal sections
·      Participate in literature review exercises for the research project
·      Receive data collection support;
·      Develop strategies for coding and data analysis
·      Consider the development of findings
·      Formulate conclusions and implications
·      Participate in mock oral defense activities
·      Learn how to package the final dissertation

Assignments will be individualized for each student.  All activities, assignments and projects will be related to segments of the dissertation; Specific details will be posted on Blackboard.
