Ohio University International Opportunity: Counseling and Higher Education Cultural View of Italy
Tuscany, Italy
May 4 -16, 2017

Open to all majors as the course will meet the requirements for many cross cultural courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Counselor educators, Higher Education educators, Licensed Counselors (master’s level or doctoral), and Higher Education (master’s practitioners or doctoral students) who wish to make an international presentation on cultural issues at the Italy Institute are asked to submit a brief proposal outline detailing the topic to Dr. Mona Robinson at robinsoh at ohio.edu<mailto:robinsoh at ohio.edu>.
Application deadline: November 1, 2016
Payment schedule: There is no application fee. After the application is accepted, a non-refundable deposit of $500 will be required to confirm your participation in the study abroad program. You will be nominated for acceptance within 2-4 weeks of applying and the deposit will be due at that time to secure your space.
Ohio University students will submit applications through OGO – Final Payments will be due by May 1. OU administrators and faculty should notify OGO of their intention to participate. Student travelers will be billed through their OHIO University account. Non student travelers will be billed individually.

The Patton College of Education (PCOE) provides learning-centered experiences that foster a diverse academic community. PCOE strives to promote and teach diversity in its educational offerings and interactions across the professional field. This program will foster this goal by preparing students and educators to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Taking a cross-cultural approach to learning about higher education topics will help participants to understand the topic of culture and how it influences higher education practices. Participants will increase their multicultural competencies and learn to embrace diversity, one of the core values of The Patton College.

This 10-day cultural institute will bring together undergraduates, graduates, counselors, counselor educators, and other higher education staff and professionals for an immersive experience that will increase participants’ global competencies vital to their profession. With a focus on counseling and higher education within the country of Italy, the program will provide participants with introductory and advanced instruction in counseling and an understanding of the role culture plays in counseling and higher education. Moreover, participants will increase their multicultural competencies and learn to embrace diversity, one of the core values of The Patton College. Participants will engage in a variety of activities including refereed lectures and workshops, guest speakers, and excursions to culturally significant sites in Italy. They will reflect on parallels and differences between the US and Italian cultures, conflicts and counseling approaches.
Undergraduate and graduate participants will enroll in OHIO credit for this experience. Professional participants such as counselors, teachers, staff, administrators, and other higher education professionals will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for their participation.
Undergrad program fee: $1500 (covers lodging, transportation, excursions and most meals.
Graduate  program fee: $2828 ( covers lodging, transportation, excursions and most meals.
Non-credit program fee: $2828 (covers lodging, transportation, excursions and most meals.

*Single room/bath can be provided at an extra cost of $300 Euros
