[Counselor_Educ] Peer Support Group for PCOE and Counselor Education students

Dear doctoral and master’s students,

My name is Huan-Tang Lu and I am a 2nd year doctoral student from Taiwan in Counselor Education and Supervision in the Patton College of Education. I am emailing you to introduce the peer support group (PSG) scheduled throughout 2016 – 2017 academic year. Due to the nature of graduate work, students can easily become isolated and not have support as they navigate many components and available resources of the program and college. Although I have maintained a fine balance between school work and well-being last year, I had to use some of my leisure time figuring out these resources and components in addition to regular coursework. Therefore, I created this PSG in order to facilitate students to share and obtain experiences from peers, better utilizing their limited time on developing scholarship.

This PSG aims to create a supportive environment for graduate students’ development as future scholars. It will be held bi-weekly to cover topics including scholarly writing, conference presentation, comprehensive exam, dissertation, and job hunting. It has no charge, and light refreshment will be provided.

In addition to topics covered by guest speakers, I plan to initiate two activities in the PSG,
(1) Turn your papers into Conference Proposals: the PSG will provide support to students who want to submit papers to conference. Students who make appointments can bring ideas, outlines, and papers to discuss with writing support mentors (WSM). The main objective of this activity is to support the student to experience the conference presentation as the 1st author. Information of several conferences will be provided.

(2) Writing support mentorship: the PSG will provide support to students who want to improve writing of coursework papers. This activity is not to replace other services on campus but to supplement services that are specific to PCOE and Counselor Education students. Students who make appointments can bring ideas, outlines, and papers to discuss with WSM individually. The WSM will be the facilitator to assist students in developing article structures and APA style writing. That is, students have to bring in their own ideas and thoughts regarding the coursework papers. Students are also welcome to work with the WSM to develop their resumes.

Students interested in participating in a certain group have to fill out a brief online form for the arrangement purpose (https://ohio.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_br5HLMnauzJkRlX). Students are welcome to participate in certain topics/ activities only instead of the whole group. In addition, the PSG is looking for Guest Speakers for scheduled topics and 3-5 Writing Support Mentors who are passionate about supporting other students’ scholarship.
