COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This purpose of this course is to prepare counselors-in-training for the crisis situations they will experience as a counselor. Through participation in this course, students will gain the strategies, skills, and techniques necessary for crisis intervention situations. Relevant research on crises resolution, and resilience, will be discussed.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. Develop an understanding of the counselors' roles and responsibilities as members of an interdisciplinary team during a local, regional, or national crisis, disaster, or other trauma causing event.

2. Develop an understanding from a developmental perspective of the effects of crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events on persons of all ages, including an understanding of how disability, psychopathology, situational factors, and environmental factors relate to crisis intervention.

3. Develop an understanding of the impact of crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events on persons with addictions, along with the appropriate screening and assessment.


4.   Develop an understanding of how to assess for, manage, and react to suicide and  homicide risk, including the use of psychological first aid strategies in a variety of  settings.  CACREP II.F.5.m - crisis intervention, trauma informed, and community based strategies, such as psychological First Aid.
