Hello Shelley,

I am writing about an upcoming colloquium that may be of interest to students and faculty in your department.

The Department of Psychology will be hosting a talk on mental health in organ transplantation given by Mary Amanda Dew, PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. The talk will be given at 11:50am on Friday, April 3rd in 102 Porter Hall. I have included an abstract below and Dr. Dew's CV is attached.

Would it be possible for you to distribute this information to your department?

Thank you,
Kristen Fox

Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-Being in Organ Transplantation: Predictors and Outcomes

Friday, April 3, 2015

11:50AM

Porter Hall 102

Mary Amanda Dew, Ph.D.

Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, Epidemiology, Biostatistics

and Clinical and Translational Science

Director, Clinical Epidemiology Program, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic

Director, Quality of Life Research, Artificial Heart Program

Adult Cardiothoracic Transplantation

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Medical Center

Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Organ transplantation exemplifies the use of high-technology medicine to treat advanced and chronic diseases. Dr. Dew will discuss the health psychology of organ transplantation, and its relevance to the broader study of psychological issues in chronic disease. Drawing on her studies in this area over the past 20 years, as well as the burgeoning literature in the field of transplantation, she will describe the most common psychological problems and concerns arising in transplant populations; consider factors that increase risk for such problems; and review evidence concerning the impact of such problems on transplant-related morbidities and mortality. She will also describe strategies that either improve-or hold promise to improve-mental health and general psychosocial well-being after transplantation. Although the focus of the talk will be on transplant recipients, she will consider the perspectives of family caregivers and living donors, and the impact of the transplant process on these individuals as well as the transplant recipients themselves.
