Executive Director

Position Summary

This position will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for MHAFC’s staff, programs, finances and execution of its mission, as well as coordination as needed with the national MHA organization. The Executive Director works in partnership with the MHAFC Board of Trustees and reports directly to the board President.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Leadership and Management

Develop and implement the agency’s strategic plan in partnership with the MHAFC board of trustees
Provide vision and leadership to the strategic and day-to-day operations of MHAFC
Demonstrate entrepreneurial drive by innovating new ways to expand the reach of MHAFC within Central Ohio to meet the needs of a greater population
Oversee preparation, management and control of annual budget to meet organizational goals each fiscal year in accordance within the guidelines of funding authorities
Oversee preparation of all reports to funders including United Way, ADAMH Board, ODMHAS, and governmental entities including City of Columbus, Ohio Attorney General, and others
Oversee revisions of personnel policies, code of regulations, and other appropriate documents
Actively engage and energize staff, volunteers, board members, event committees, partnering organizations, and funders
Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems
Fund Raising/Public Relations

Maintain positive relationships with the board of trustees, staff and volunteers, industry leaders, funders, government officials, politicians, and donors
Represent MHAFC and its activities to the community
Develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with other agencies and individuals in the mental health and human service professional community
Mobilize greater resources for the organization and provide oversight to MHAFC’s capital and fund development efforts
Oversee identification and preparation of grants to potential new funding sources; supervision of grant activities
Develop and foster relationships with current and prospective MHAFC members and donors
Maintain excellent working relationship and collaboration with the National MHA
Program Development

Guide agency program innovation, development, and management to address client needs
Identify and pursue agency and program expansion opportunities in cases where MHAFC’s mission and long term viability are each supported
Ensure effective systems to track progress and regularly evaluate programs
Regularly communicate program metrics and outcomes to the board, funders, and other constituents
Keep abreast of community needs in mental health and communicate those needs to staff and board members
Work with MHA of Ohio to develop and maintain statewide presence in Ohio. Advocate for position in state legislature when appropriate
Staff Supervision

Hire, lead, coach, develop, evaluate and retain a high-performing team within the limits of financial budgets
Maintain a cohesive team approach to problem solving
Manage staff performance issues, discipline and terminations when necessary
Executive/Board Partnership

Develop, maintain, and support a strong board of trustees; serve as ex-officio of each committee, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for ongoing operations
Provide information to the board of trustees that is necessary for decision making and policy formation
Team with the board of trustees to coordinate nominating process for new board members, ensuring diversity and code of regulation adherence
Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher preferred; Five years of progressive management/administration experience in the nonprofit sector, preferably in mental health; Demonstrated achievement of organizational growth strategies; Experience and knowledge of current trends in the field of mental health; Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, networking, and advocacy skills; Experience working with a board of trustees.

Part-time Ombudsman: COVA Location

The main responsibilities include:

Assist mental health and alcohol/drug consumers in understanding their rights and responsibilities as consumers;
Assist mental health and alcohol/drug consumers in navigating the mental health, alcohol/drug, and other systems that impact their recovery;
Assist consumers in overcoming barriers to treatment;
Assist consumers who may fall “between the cracks” in the current system due to changing providers or other reasons;
Intervene with consumers who are afraid to use their providers’ grievance procedures due to fear of retaliation;
Assist consumers who are not satisfied despite appropriate provider interventions;
Collect, analyze, and provide information from his/her contact with consumers to stakeholders, such as system agencies and ADAMH, regarding the scope and timeliness of consumers’ access to quality services;
Collaborate with consumer and family advocates, provider client rights officers, and provider clinical management staff to ensure continued meaningful services to consumers needing assistance;
Participate in ongoing training in cultural diversity and cultural competency issues, as well as client rights;
Keep current on all MH/AOD policy changes that impact consumers and family members;
Assist in writing of Ombudsman promotional materials;
On occasion, offer presentations/trainings for consumers, family members, students;
Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director/MHAFC Ombudsman.
This is a 10-hour per week position, with the possibility of more hours as the job expands. It requires a bachelor’s degree, with preference of a master’s degree and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the mental health and AOD system. Mental health licensure required (LSW, LPC).
