Dear CACREP Liaison,

Exciting news
We want to make you aware of an opportunity that may be available to students in your program.  The Veteran's Administration (VA) has announced a pilot program offering funded pre-degree internships for Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselors for the 2015-2016 academic year. The application has to come from a VA Medical Center, but the interns must be students from CACREP accredited programs.

What you should do
Not all VA Medical Centers will be eligible because there are a number of criteria for participation so that every center may not qualify.  Here is a link to a list of VA Medical Centers in the US

Contact your local facility and find out if they are eligible to apply.  If they are not eligible now, let them know that your program and interns are interested and available and maybe they will qualify next year.  Building a relationship with your local facility will enhance the chances that they will hire Professional Counselors and be eligible for this opportunity in the future.

The details
Thanks to advocacy efforts by the National Board for Certified Counselors and other counseling organizations   like AMHC and ACA, this opportunity was opened to Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselors as well as Marriage and Family Therapists.  NBCC is working to expand the funding across the VA system in the future. The deadline for VA Medical Centers to submit letters of intent is April 17, so please act quickly.

If you do contact your local VA Medical Center, please let the CACREP Office know the results so that we can evaluate and continue these advocacy efforts.
